BRAINPORT

Name:
BRAINPORT

Description
The Brainport is a device used for individuals with low vision or that suffer from blindness. It detects changes in light patterns and sends the signal to the user's tongue. After much training the user can detect objects and movements. The user must have intact gustatory sensations on the tongue in order for this device to work. The extensive training may be an obstacle to users of the device. This device was also created to work in unison with other AT devices or services such as service dogs. The FDA has not approved the use of this device but it can be approved for investigational purposes which mean the price could potentially be of no cost to the user if enrolled in a clinical trial. The technology was developed by Wicab Inc.

Purpose
The purpose of this device is to help users see the world through technology applied to the tongue. People who are absolutely blind can use this device and with proper training see patterns and objects. Users must have a cognitive level that is appropriate for training and there must be intact nerve innervation to the tongue.
